Mulberry Silk Hankies 4 oz.
Hankies are produced manually after the cocoons have been degummed. These are made by stretching
silk cocoons across a wooden frame. Several cocoons are stretched over the frame so each hankie is composed of several layers, with each layer containing the silk fibers from one cocoon. These preparations contain both long and short fibers. These hankies are undyed and the lighting in this picture makes the hankies look very white, when actually, they are a natural cream/ecru/tan color. Hankies are great for spinning, papermaking, fiber art & educational projects, and felting and will give your handmade items a beautiful sheen. To separate, look at the dense ridge
around the edges and find the least compacted
looking corner. Grasp that corner and slowly
peel off a layer. If you can not find a good
corner, gently pinch up a layer in the center of
the hankie and slowly lift a layer up and off.
Once you have a thin layer, stretch it into a
rectangle and keep stretching it out lengthwise
until it is the size of roving you wish to spin. One layer of
your silk hankie is now ready to spin. These hankies are purchased in bulk by the "brick" or "bale" and a quantity removed, weighed, and shipped to you. I do not take time to fold these neatly into little shapes and stacks. The shape of these hankies, range from square, some almost rectangular, oblong, and some darn near circular like a tortilla! :-)
